The Central Pollution Control Board
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is a statutory organization under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. It was established in 1974 under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, and later empowered under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. The primary role of CPCB is to promote cleanliness of streams and wells, improve the quality of air, and prevent environmental pollution across the country. It sets national standards for air, water, and noise pollution, monitors pollution levels, and coordinates with State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) for enforcement. The board also provides technical services, conducts research, and advises the government on pollution control strategies. Additionally, CPCB plays an active role in regulating the management of various types of waste, including hazardous, biomedical, e-waste, and plastic waste. Headquartered in New Delhi, CPCB also works to raise public awareness and conduct training programs related to environmental protection. Through its comprehensive approach, CPCB plays a vital role in maintaining environmental quality and safeguarding public health in India.
