Potable Water Bottles (Quality Control) Order, 2023

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) on July 06, 2023, notified the Potable Water Bottles (Quality Control) Order, 2023 under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

Scope of IS 17803:2022

1.1 Minimum Requirements for Potable Water Bottles

IS 17803:2022 sets forth a comprehensive set of minimum requirements for potable water bottles made of copper, stainless steel, and aluminum. These requirements are designed to ensure that the bottles are safe for carrying drinking water up to 1,500 ml. Safety is paramount, and this standard aims to guarantee that the materials and construction of these bottles do not impart harmful substances or alter the quality of the water they hold.

1.2 Additional Requirements and Shapes for Aluminum Bottles

While IS 3603 covers the basic requirements for aluminum bottles, IS 17803:2022 builds upon this foundation by introducing additional requirements and specifications for the shapes of aluminum bottles. This ensures that aluminum bottles specifically designed for carrying drinking water meet the highest standards of quality and safety.

1.3 Exclusions: Insulated and Vacuum Flasks

It’s important to note that IS 17803:2022 has its limitations. The standard explicitly excludes insulated and vacuum flasks. These types of containers have their own set of considerations due to their insulating properties, and they are covered by separate standards.

Why IS 17803:2022 Important?

  1. Ensuring Safety: The primary goal of this standard is to guarantee the safety of consumers. By adhering to IS 17803:2022, manufacturers of copper, stainless steel, and aluminum water bottles are obligated to create products that won’t compromise the quality of the drinking water or pose health risks.

  2. Quality Assurance: IS 17803:2022 promotes quality assurance in the production of potable water bottles. Manufacturers must meet these standards to ensure that their products are reliable and free from defects.

  3. Consumer Confidence: When you choose a water bottle that complies with IS 17803:2022, you can have confidence that you are using a product that has been rigorously tested and meets established safety criteria.

  4. Sustainability: By defining specific requirements for materials and construction, this standard also contributes to sustainability efforts by ensuring that these bottles have a long lifespan and are not prone to premature wear and tear.
